- Kornelia Ender could
- swim -- and fast! At the
- age of 13, in 1972, the
- swimmer from East
- Germany won three silver
- medals at the Olympics. In 1973, at the
- world championships, she broke the world
- record in the 100-meter freestyle.

- By the 1976 Olympics, Kornelia had broken
- the record eight more times. At those Games,
- she won four events (the 100-meter and 200-
- meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, and the
- 4x100-meter medley relay), becoming the
- first female swimmer to win four gold medals
- in a single Olympics. She set world records
- in each event. She won the 200-meter
- freestyle only 27 minutes after winning
- her previous race! As a member of the
